Why We Need Music Therapy Licensure
Licensure for the profession of music therapy in PA would provide:
- Consumer Protection
- Requiring individuals to meet rigorous standards of educational & clinical training if individuals present themselves as music therapists. Music therapists must demonstrate competency through board certification and continuing education activity.
- Access to Services
- State regulations often require official state recognition of a profession & credential in order for consumers to access professional services with special education, Medicaid waiver programs, and private insurance.
- State Recognition
- Recognition of the clinical training and national board certification credential "MT-BC" (Music Therapist Board Certified) is essential in protecting consumers in PA. Music therapists must complete a minimum of 1200 clinical hours and a minimum of a 4-year degree, or it's equivalent, to practice music therapy.
- Decreased Confusion
- Current confusion in the marketplace regarding qualifications of a music therapist.
- Healthcare facilities (which rely upon state regulations) often do not know the difference between the qualifications of music therapists, music practitioners, music thanatologists, and other non-music therapy musicians in healthcare.
- Decrease Harm
